Born from a desire to help, inspired by the bikers at Wootton Bassett, and with close ties to the military, the question was asked how Land Rover enthusiasts could help our armed forces! CONVOY for HEROES is a non-profit group of Land Rover owners dedicated in there time to assist HELP for HEROES who, in turn provide facilities and support services to benefit British servicemen and women injured in action.
In 2011, CONVOY for HEROES plan was to beat the Guinness World Record originally set at 260 in April 2004, whilst raising valuable funds for HELP for HEROES. Using the Heritage Motor Centre as a camping base and the Jaguar Land Rover proving ground next door, on a baking hot Easter weekend, CONVOY for HEROES broke that record with an outstanding figure of 348 vehicles creating a new annual event.
CONVOY for HEROES held its annual event near Loughborough in 2012 & 2013 but unfortunately the weather on each occasion has hampered any further world record attempts with torrential rain and the coldest Easter for 50 years, leaving all but the hardiest to camp and convoy in aid of HELP for HEROES. 2014 saw CONVOY for HEROES relocate to a more central location at Long Marston Airfield, near Stratford upon Avon, which gave them the opportunity at another attempt breaking their own Guinness World Record. In the end we had 178 Land Rovers which didn’t enable us to attempt a record run, but in 2015 we tried again. The current record now stands at 516 Land Rovers, set by LandMania Club de Portugal in September 2014.
Convory for Heroes want the record to come back home to the UK in 2016, and in order to achieve this they will need around 550 Land Rovers, basically anything born with the green (or more recently black) oval. We hope to have vehicles from across the entire marque from the earliest series to the latest Range Rovers and everything in between.
Over these five years, CONVOY for HEROES has raised over £30,000 for HELP for HEROES. The team have given up their time to run the event as volunteers. Nobody is paid from the directors to the teams of marshals who supervise the Convoy. Not only that, in addition to organising this now annual event, the CONVOY for HEROES team attend shows and events around the UK, raising the awareness for HELP for HEROES. Each and every member of our organisers pays their own expenses and entrance fees, even to attend our own Easter event. Every penny counts. We have also been very privileged to have had a tour of the Recovery Centre at Tedworth House to see where the money raised is spent.
