Under 17 Car Club

The Under 17 Car Club promotes safe driving skills and attitudes through our continuing programme of voluntary pre-licence driver development events.

We believe that the most effective way to enable this vulnerable group to respond to the challenge is by:

• Substantially increasing their awareness of the risks of on-road driving;

• Substantially increasing their awareness of the risks of on-road driving;

• Supporting them in developing risk aware driving attitudes; and

• Increasing their level of technical competence as Drivers;

• Learning to drive to a high standard while having great fun and meeting new friends.

Founded in 1976 the Under 17 Car Club has enabled over 3,000 pre-licence drivers from the age of 11, and their Associates to develop positive attitudes to road safety and high levels of driving skill. Every member of the Club follows a methodology focused on competence equivalent to IAM (Institute of Advance Motorists) or RoSPA (The Royal Society of Prevention of Accidents) standard - and progress is determined by attitudinal development and demonstrate understanding of risk.

Working closely with their Associates (usually a Parent or Guardian) - and using their Associate’s car, each Member follows a systematic learning and practice pathway from fully supervised driving to independent driving. A typical Member will enjoy 30 events per year with around 5 hours practice at each event. A member reaching Grade 1 and permitted to drive independently will have around 400 hours experience in a variety of vehicles from Mum and Dad’s car to vans and trucks and will have received both First Aid and Skid Training as well as demonstration drives from Police Officers and Members of RoSPA and the IAM.

This scheme, which is absolutely reliant on the engagement of Associates with their Members learning, is both highly cost-effective and robustly developmental of both the Member and of their relationship with their Associate. The club environment also provides excellent social development and an opportunity for full family involvement. Many families have more than one member and the club really does provide a vibrant and fun environment for the whole family.
